Rap vs. Hip Hop and rapper vs. MC

So I recently had a conversation with someone about the state of Hip Hop and it occurred to me that in 2012 people still don't know the difference between rap and hip hop. With over 20 years of music under my belt I felt it my duty to put out this official/unofficial list. Feel free to comment.

an MC will correct you if you call them a rapper - a rapper will look dumbfounded if you call them an MC

• Hip Hop teaches the youth independence, unity, and freedom of expression - Rap teaches the youth sex, violence, and disrespect

• rappers are in the industry - MCs are in the streets

• rappers watch the crowd - MCs move the crowd

• Rap is an action - Hip Hop is a way of life

• rappers make it rain with money at strip clubs - MCs help raise money at charity events

• Rap is consistent - Hip Hop is infinite

• rappers steal from the culture - MCs are cultured

• Rap takes action verbs - Hip Hop takes skills

• rappers claim they're gonna change the game - MCs help elevate the game

• rappers are quick to fight to create a buzz - MCs fight for a cause to bring awareness

• rappers only talk about sex, drugs, and money - MCs have diverse subject matter and can talk about anything

• a Rap song will give you a buzz- a Hip Hop song will give you a high

• rappers claim they have swagger nowadays - MCs had swagger back in the day

• rappers come unprepared to the studio session - MCs get there early ready to work

• rappers get locked down - MCs hold down the rappers getting locked up

• rappers make jingles - MCs make compositions

• rappers don't last they become one-hit wonders - MCs don't retire they just get older

• rappers keep money clips and matches in their pocket - MCs keep a pen and pad

• rappers are hot until another rapper cools them off - MCs stay relevant and become legends

• rappers do it for the clubs - MCs do it for the love

• Hip Hop is the foundation - Rap is the headache that won't go away (Ha Ha well it's true)
